A soft ding announced the elevator's arrival at the penthouse.
Keeping her gaze lowered, Chloe stepped out carrying her service tray and moved directly toward the suite. The door was slightly ajar. Without a word, she gave it a gentle push and entered.
The room was still. Nance wasn't there yet.
The earlier call had informed her he was running behind and wouldn't be back for another ten minutes. Her instructions were simple: drop off the food and leave.
Chloe set the tray down calmly, then turned and walked out as though everything was routine.
She made her way down the corridor toward the elevators. Under the warm hallway lights, her shadow stretched long behind her. Security cameras watched from both ends, capturing her every move—but that was the least of her concerns.
Just as she was about to step into the elevator car, the lights flickered and died.
The blackout lasted only a second—maybe less—before power restored.
But instead of entering the elevator, Chloe turned on her heel and strode back toward Suite One.
She didn't worry about the cameras. She knew that during that brief electrical cut, the entire surveillance system had been compromised. The feed was now frozen on the last frame before the outage; everything after it was untraceable, wiped from the record. Even if someone noticed discrepancies later, that segment would be gone for good.
Chloe quickened her pace. She had less than five minutes. The system glitch wouldn't last longer than that, and Nance was due back in ten.
She still needed to exit safely, which meant moving fast.
Back inside the suite, she confirmed the internal security sensors were offline, then headed straight for Nance's bedroom.
The room was lavishly furnished, everything perfectly in place.
Her eyes immediately landed on a safe tucked discreetly beside the closet. Was the pink diamond in there?
She couldn't be sure she had enough time.
Without hesitation, she pulled out her tools and set to work. It was an old mechanical safe—trickier than a digital one, requiring a delicate touch to open without leaving evidence.
Holding her breath, she worked swiftly. She was almost there, the lock nearly giving way—when she heard footsteps.
Her body went still. Already?
Was someone coming?
Had Nance returned early?
