"What about Robert?"
Chloe froze for a moment. She glanced at Eugene, hesitated, then lowered her voice. "Once I handle my business, I'll come back for him. Thanks for watching him these past few days."
"Chloe. Claire. I don't care which name you go by. You're the only one I want," Eugene said, his tone serious. "You know what? When you lie, that whole act of trying to look calm is actually pretty obvious. Your hands are clenched so tight—what are you nervous about? And your voice is shaking. What aren't you saying?"
Chloe stayed silent.
"Can you look me in the eyes and tell me you don't have feelings for me anymore?"
Her heart gave a hard thump. She nearly lost her balance. When she met his gaze, it was so intense it felt like he was trying to see right through her. How could she look him in the eye and say something that cruel?
For a second, she almost gave in. The truth was, she didn't dislike him at all. If anything, she cared about him even more now. Part of her just wanted to pull him close and spend the whole night wrapped up with him, forgetting everything else.
But did she even have that right anymore?
She wasn't just Chloe anymore. She was Clo—the most capable shadow in Silverash's ranks.
"I... don't have feelings for you anymore." She forced herself to hold his gaze, speaking each word deliberately. Then she added, "A guy like you just isn't exciting enough. Before we slept together, you seemed kind of interesting. Afterward? Nothing special. You're... just okay, I guess."
When Eugene heard her cold, detached words, his expression darkened. He fell quiet.
Chloe kept looking at him. She knew exactly how much those words would hurt him, but her own heart was breaking too.
"So you're saying I'm not good enough?" Eugene asked, his voice dropping lower.
"If you were good enough, would I have walked away?" Chloe shrugged, putting on a casual, almost playful front. "My last name is Bingham now. I go by Claire."
"Ms. Bingham. That's a solid identity. The Bingham family's research division is top-tier in the sciences." Eugene offered a faint, knowing smile. "Not a bad cover. Fits well."
"Then there's nothing left to say between us, Mr. Rosewood. You should know when to walk away. We don't need to keep talking." Chloe did everything she could to play the villain. "I told you a long time ago—I'm not a good person. You're the one who got in too deep."
"Is that right?" Eugene's smile remained soft.
"Running into you today was a mistake. I hope nothing this awkward happens again. Take care." Chloe finished coldly, then turned and walked away.
She didn't look back. Reaching out, she pushed open the door and stepped out quickly.
She was still in her hotel uniform. She hurried down from that floor without slowing, not caring who might see her.
Right then, all she wanted was to leave—to put as much distance between herself and this man as possible.
