Being that close made Chloe deeply uneasy. A heavy sense of guilt weighed on her—when it came to Eugene, she could never bring herself to be truly harsh.
Now, with him pinning her against the wall, she knew she could have stabbed him. It would draw blood, sure, but it would force him to back off.
Yet hurting him was out of the question. This was the man she loved so deeply—even when faced with a perfect imitation of her, he'd seen through it instantly. He had given her every reason to feel secure. He was worth giving herself to completely.
It was just that now... she felt she no longer deserved him.
"You're being ridiculous, Mr. Rosewood. We don't know each other. Let go." Chloe kept her voice low, tense. "If you don't, I won't hold back."
"And what will you do?" Eugene's frown deepened, his patience clearly worn thin. He stared straight into her eyes and pulled her even closer.
"What's your move—stomp on my foot, or maybe..." He cut himself off, done with arguing. Instead, he tightened his grip around her waist, pulled her firmly against his chest, and before she could react, he bent down and captured her lips in a hard, sudden kiss.
The move caught Chloe completely off guard.
Everything happened too fast. She had pushed him away so firmly, yet here he was, refusing to let her go.
His lips were warm, familiar—stirring feelings in her with frightening ease.
She had to admit, when it came to Eugene, her defenses crumbled. Her body betrayed her every time. One touch from him, and she was undone.
Her breath grew unsteady. Chloe's legs felt weak, and her hands came up helplessly to clutch his shoulders.
"Stop," she managed, voice thick with frustration.
Eugene pulled back just enough to look at her. Taking in her flustered, vulnerable expression, he said quietly, "Your body doesn't lie. And you still claim we're strangers?"
"Why did you leave me behind?" Eugene's voice was rough with hurt. "We promised to face everything together. What could possibly have made you..."
"I fell out of love with you," Chloe said, her tone icy.
Eugene had braced himself for all kinds of explanations—external pressures, impossible circumstances—but he never expected her to say something like that.
She fell out of love with him.
Such a simple line.
