Lyra
I felt sick. Rock bottom sick. The hangover actually felt good next to the hollowness sitting under it.
Odile had kissed me.
Right after Nadia stood there in the dark and said she could see how badly the girl wanted me. Not an hour after. Nadia had said it out loud in front of everyone and then walked off into the night, and I had stood there and let Odile put her mouth on mine.
And I had wanted it. That was the part. For a minute I had wanted it, with Nadia's father in the ground and Nadia's mother in a hospital bed and Nadia somewhere out there on her own, I had stood in the dark and been perfectly willing to have another woman.
My head shook back and forth against the pillow, denial thick in my throat. My hands scraped up over my face and I whined into them, the heels of my palms pressing hard against my closed eyes.
He did this.
My father did this. He said he would and then he went and did it, and Nadia's father is dead.
I was off the bed before I had finished the thought.
With unsteady hands, I pulled on my trousers and grabbed my shirt. I needed my boots too, but I couldn't find them. Screw it. The floorboards were cold and rough against my bare feet as I stumbled out the door.
I went down the tower steps half running, my shirt hanging open. The hangover had gone somewhere else and left only the fury behind it.
The corridors were full of servants and guards about their morning, and they gaped as I went past. I did not care how I looked. I just had to get to him.
I took the main stairs down two at a time, not even bothering to slow as I approached the landings. I stomped down the long hallway leading to his study, my bare feet making slapping sounds that echoed off the stone walls. Ahead, the door to his study loomed. I reached it and shoved it open without knocking.
