My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 458

Lyra

"Aren't you tired of acting like everything is all right? Save that for the idiots you keep around you," I snapped, my voice cracking.

I wrapped my arms around myself, fighting the urge to scream. Tears spilled down my cheeks, no matter how hard I tried to hold them back. "I did nothing. You made it perfectly clear what would happen if I ever let anything slip to Sera. And I kept my mouth shut. I told her nothing."

"You did keep your silence." His voice was calm and smooth, unruffled.

I glared at him through my tears. "It doesn't matter though, does it? I don't even have access to my sister thanks to you! You made sure of that."

I took a shuddering breath.

"So why did you kill him?"

"Hmm. I see." He rubbed his chin. "You're talking about Edran."

I stared at him, my heart pounding, my breath caught somewhere in my throat. He had said the name himself. He had not even flinched.

He rearranged a few things on his desk. A paperweight. A quill. The edges of a parchment. My nails dug into my palms.

Then he said, casually, without looking up from the parchment he was straightening, "I got the news late last night. It made me very sad."

I wanted to climb over that desk and slap the pretense off his face.

"He was a good man," he said, his voice soft. "Good service to the court. A fine scribe."

I clutched the edge of the desk, my knuckles white.

Aldric met my eyes, his brow furrowed. "Edran committed suicide, Lyra. I had no hand in it."

"Oh save that bullshit for an idiot," I snapped. "I'm not stupid, father."

He nodded. "I know you're not stupid. But that doesn't make what I said a lie. I had no hand in Edran's death."

I stared at him, believing none of it, the anger boiling over inside me. He sat there, so calm, so collected, so completely unmoved. It made me sick.

"You're lying. You told me what you would do to him. You said it to my face with Nadia standing right there. And now he's dead."

I let out an angry laugh. "You think you're so clever. But I see right through you, Father. I know you. I know what you're capable of."

"You would let anyone die if it served you. You would use anyone, hurt anyone, without a second thought, if it got you what you wanted. Your own daughters aren't safe from it. We never have been."
