Sera
Mina stood up. She walked over and pulled it open.
Lord Torin stood in the hallway. Two Valdris guards stood directly behind him, their hands resting on their sword hilts. Torin looked at Mina with obvious disgust before his eyes found me sitting on the floor with grease coating my fingers.
"Princess Seraphina," Torin said. His voice was hard and commanding. "Get up. You are returning to the guest wing."
I stayed on the floor. "I am staying here."
"Your mother is highly distressed," Torin said. "King Aldric instructed me to ensure your safety. You will not participate in this barbaric duel tomorrow. I am forbidding it on behalf of the Valdris crown."
"You do not forbid anything in my fortress."
The voice came from the dark shadows of the hallway.
Torin flinched. He spun around.
Fenris stepped into the torchlight. He wore his dark fighting leathers, smelling of pine and cold iron. He looked massive next to the southern guards, his broad shoulders taking up half the corridor.
"Alpha Volkov," Torin said. He tried to keep his voice steady. He failed. "The King—"
"The King is hundreds of miles away," Fenris cut him off. His voice was a low, vibrating growl. "Sera is my mate. She is Ironmaw. Her fights are Ironmaw business. You will go back to your room. You will shut your mouth. If you attempt to give an order in my territory again, I will remove your tongue."
Torin went completely pale. He looked at Fenris, then glanced at his two guards. The guards were staring at the floor. They didn't want any part of this.
Torin gave a stiff, jerky nod. He turned and walked quickly down the hall. The guards followed close behind him, their armor clanking in the quiet corridor.
Fenris stepped into the room. He looked at Mina.
"Leave us," he said.
Mina didn't argue. She slipped past him and closed the door. The iron latch clicked into place.
We were alone.
I was still sitting on the floor. I looked up at him. The air in the room instantly felt thicker. The raw, heavy tension from the breakfast table came rushing back, suffocating and hot. The bond hummed loudly in my chest, a physical vibration against my ribs.
