Elara
I gripped my bag tighter as the door swung open. Marcas glared down at me, his eyes hard and unforgiving. "What are you doing here?" he snapped.
I brushed past him, not waiting for an invitation. His scent, cold and biting, clung to my skin as I entered the foyer. Delia stood in the living room, her pale face a mask of indifference as she watched me approach.
"I'm out of time," I blurted, my voice tight with desperation. "Thirteen weeks. I should be showing by now. And he keeps talking about his son."
A short silence stretched between us, heavy and oppressive. Delia's gaze slid away, her lips pursing into a thin line. Marcas's jaw clenched, a muscle twitching in his cheek.
I swallowed hard, squaring my shoulders. "I need a solution. Now."
"The King will provide one," Marcas barked.
I laughed bitterly. "When? He's gone quiet. For weeks now, he hasn't answered my brass box. Has he sent you word?"
Marcas's eyes hardened with annoyance. He didn't reply.
Delia remained mute, her fingers smoothing the creases from her dress. But a flicker in her gaze, a tightening around her mouth, betrayed the truth.
I felt my blood turn cold. "He's gone quiet on you too, hasn't he?"
Marcas's face darkened. "You forget yourself, girl. Speak to me with respect."
I stood my ground, meeting his glare. "I forget nothing. And neither do you. He's abandoned us." I gestured wildly. "I'm running out of time, and the King doesn't even care! When Kane discovers there's no child, I'm dead. Finished. Your precious mission is over."
Delia's head snapped up, her eyes narrowing. "That's enough," Marcas snarled.
"No, it's not enough!" I cried. "I need to know what I'm supposed to do! But he won't tell us anything!"
Marcas slammed his fist on the table, making me flinch. "If the King has gone quiet, then we wait. No one acts without the King's instructions. Is that clear?"
I nodded stiffly, biting my tongue. But my mind raced with grim possibilities. I needed a way out, and I needed it fast.
Marcas's gaze slid over me dismissively. "Kane is soft. He won't touch you."
