"Now!"

The grey wolf came for him like a boulder tumbling down a mountain, massive, unstoppable.

Torvald's hands grew claws, his jaw elongated, teeth sharpening. He swung the spear before him as the grey wolf slammed into his chest. Claws scraped armor-hard fur. Torvald grunted from the force of the blow, spear tip skidding across a collarbone. He dug his heels into the boards, bracing against the impact.

He met the wolf, spear flashing, claws raking. A gurgle of pain, a thud as the wolf's weight slammed into him. They crashed into the hearth, embers flying, flames hissing.

Something wet smacked the floorboards. The grey wolf's paws scraped, scrabbling at the timber. Torvald's claws dug in, tearing splinters of wood. The wolf made a sound no creature should make, a gurgling, bubbling moan. Its belly gaped open, innards uncoiling, thick and ropy. Blood welled from the wound, black in the dim light.

Behind them, Ilse was moving. Bare feet padding. And then her shape changed as she shifted. She dropped forward on hands becoming paws. Her body expanded, swelling in size, bones cracking and warping, tendons snapping. Her dress shredded, falling away in tatters that caught fire in the hearth's embers, curling to ash. Pale fur rippled over her skin, sliding down her length.

Her shift finished in mere moments and a wolf the size of a bear stood before the girl. Her eyes flared amber, casting a sickly glow across the room. She lunged beside Torvald, her massive jaws closing around the grey wolf's throat. The brindle wolf yelped and scrambled back as Ilse shook her head savagely, tearing the grey one's throat open in a spray of blood.

The russet wolf charged at her but she swatted him aside like a toy, sending him skidding into the far wall. A raider shouted in shock and pain as Ilse's claws raked across his chest, tearing through leather and flesh. Torvald's claws slashed a raider's leg, bringing him down in a scream.
