Sera
Torvald's eyes fell on Ilse's broken body, and something inside him shattered. With a desperate, anguished howl, he dropped to all fours and fully surrendered to the wolf. His joints shifted, thick gray fur sprouted across his skin, his face elongated into a muzzle filled with razor-sharp teeth. The massive wolf, drooling and snarling, charged forward.
Torvald clawed his way through the snapping, slavering horde, his powerful jaws tearing at man and wolf alike, crushing bones, rending flesh. Crimson droplets sprayed the walls and floor. His sole impulse was to reach the trunk, to shield his child, to conceal her from the ruthless invaders.
With growls and roars, he lunged again and again, his claws ripping, shredding, the raiders falling before him. But there were too many, and they were relentless. He was a furious, mauling beast.
They caught him at last, bringing him down with a swift blow to his hind leg. A spear pierced his side, pinning him to the floor. He thrashed wildly, but there were too many on him. Wolves sank their fangs into his throat, his belly, his face. Men grabbed his flailing limbs, his tail. They pulled, and pulled, and pulled...
The sound of tearing flesh filled the room. A gout of blood sprayed through the gap in the wicker and hit Runa's face. She didn't flinch or make a sound. She couldn't close her eyes to shut out the horror, couldn't cover her ears to block the awful noises. She could only watch, frozen, as her father was torn apart, his struggles growing weaker...
And then they stopped. The raiders stood around the ruin of Torvald's body, panting, covered in gore. One of them poked the mangled remains with a clawed foot.
Nothing but silence hung in the air, thick and heavy.
