My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 499

Rurik

I glared up at my father, who stood before me, blocking my path. "Let me take her," he urged softly. "Get her out of this cold."

The words caught in my throat. I couldn't speak. I could only hold her, my best friend, my sister.

"Let him help you, boy," Vidar said, his gravelly voice too calm. "Or let the Luna pass."

"You?" I snarled, rounding on him. "You never came once. Not once in her whole life, and now you stand there calling her your niece?"

My eyes found the Luna in the doorway. Her, with Mina at her side and that silent girl hovering behind them. They all stared, unmoving, as if stricken.

"I heard you're trying to keep this quiet," I growled, my eyes boring into the Luna's. I tightened my grip on Taya's body, feeling her weight dragging against me. A harsh laugh tore from my throat. "Sorry to spoil it for you, but half the damn smithy already knows. And it's only a matter of time before the rest of the pack follows." I glared at the Luna, my voice dropping deeper. "Taya Sarn is dead."

"What was it you hid, eh? What would a Luna want kept quiet? That a pack sister's life was cut short before her time?"

I shook my head, laughing bitterly. "You're all the same. Playing your games, making your schemes. But there's always a price. And it's always someone else who pays."

I looked at my father, then at Vidar and his men. Mina's sleeve had a stain on it.
