I opened the door and walked out. I left it ajar behind me, my hand still on the handle as I stood there, listening. I had to force myself to let go and close the door. I had to force myself to walk away. Whatever was between us, I couldn't fix it today.
I went downstairs, to my office. I needed to bury myself in paperwork and forget about Elara for a while. Callum was waiting in the chair across from my desk, an open file in his lap. He looked up as I walked in, a concerned frown on his face.
"Everything alright, Alpha?" he asked quietly.
"Yeah, fine," I said, even though it was a lie. I sat down behind my desk and pulled a stack of files toward me. "What've you got there?"
He glanced back at the folder. "The monthly ledgers. The Mistwood envoy was here again today, asking after this month's tithe." He swallowed, looking nervous. "I told them we'd get it paid soon."
I snarled under my breath. "Did they threaten us?" The wolf in me raged at the thought of another pack bullying mine.
"No. They were courteous enough. But you know how this is going to end."
I did. But I pushed the thought away and focused on the numbers in front of me. It was a while before I could speak again without growling. "How's your father holding up?" I asked finally.
"Holding on," he said softly. "But he's in pain, and the wasting's getting worse." His eyes were sad. "I wish there was something we could do to help him."
