Kane
"I need to talk to you about something," I said, coming back into the bedroom. Elara was still by the window, staring out at the trees. I set the scroll case down on the bed beside her. She glanced at it, then at me.
"What's that?" she asked. Her voice was easier to hear than it had been in days.
"From Silas. It carries Ironmaw's seal. It'll get me through their gate and into the Alpha's hall, no questions asked." I sat down on the bed and ran a hand through my hair. "I've been thinking a lot about Jace."
Elara looked at me properly for the first time in a week. I saw curiosity in her eyes, and something else, something brighter. "What about Jace?"
"It's been weeks, and nothing. That's not like him. And Mistwood is bleeding us dry every month, like they think we're made of money. I don't know..." I shrugged. "Maybe the North can help us with that. But sitting here isn't working."
I expected her to flinch away, to stare back at the wall. But she didn't. She stepped closer. "So you'd go there yourself?"
I nodded. "In person. I can't just send a letter. Not if they've taken Jace."
Her eyes widened. "How long would you be gone? How far is it?"
"Far," I said. I studied her face, trying to read it. Was that hope there? "Do you want me to go?"
"Yes," she said quickly. "You should go. If it fixes things with Mistwood. If it brings Jace home." She was talking to me, really talking, for the first time since our loss. The sound of her voice was as sweet as a song. "I'll be fine here. The pack will be fine. You're the only one who can fix this."
I felt a warmth spread through my chest. She was really listening. Really wanting me to go. I leaned forward, reaching for her. She didn't flinch. She even reached out and touched my hand.
