Chapter 503: Marshal’s Panic

"I got it."

The second Gustav heard those words, his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. He snapped his head toward Lucian, shock clearly etched across his face.

"Master..."

Lucian sat behind the wheel, one black-gloved hand tapping against the steering wheel. When he lowered his other hand from his ear, he glanced over his shoulder and began reversing the car toward the direction they had come from.

"Master, I’ll just call someone and have them intercept wherever the Di Carpios are headed." Gustav tried to talk him out of it, but at the same time, he was already reaching for his seatbelt.

"Buckle up, Gustav," Lucian muttered, still looking behind him as he drove in reverse. "We need to get Marshal first before she does."

Deep lines formed across Gustav’s forehead.

The vehicle suddenly spun around, and Lucian finally met his eyes.

"Otherwise, he’ll be dead before we can make a deal with him."

With that, the screech of tires pierced the air.

Smoke billowed from beneath the wheels.

Gustav heard the sharp click of the gear shifting before his body was shoved back against the seat. His throat bobbed, but he focused on steadying his breathing first.

It had been a while since he had ridden in a car with Lucian behind the wheel.

And in this situation?

Gustav needed to keep his head clear while his boss danced with death.

"God help us," he breathed, keeping his eyes fixed ahead.

As for Lucian, his sharp eyes glinted as he sped straight toward the northwest perimeter where the Di Carpios were headed.

They weren’t as familiar with this area, but they were experienced enough to adapt.

Ashley had changed their plans at the last minute.

Before their takeoff, she had been restless. At first, Lucian had taken it as some sort of jitters. Ashley had been a puppet of the Di Carpios for almost her entire life. Defying the very people who had conditioned her to seek their approval could easily trigger every survival instinct drilled into her.

But Ashley denied it.

And she listened to her gut.

While everyone else prepared and mustered every ounce of energy for a deadly fight, Ashley kept working.

Soon enough, she obtained information from someone she knew in the area, paying the right price for valuable intel.

Hence, their slight disadvantage when it came to the mansion and its surroundings.

Even so, thanks to Ashley, they hadn’t walked blindly into a trap.

Sure enough, her life among the Di Carpios—and her years as Scott’s protégé—had proven useful.

Because just as Scott knew her, Ashley knew him.

She could anticipate how Scott would strategize and how far he would go to protect Marshal.

Above all, they might have been at a disadvantage inside the woods, but letting Marshal escape into the city would actually work in their favor.

This area was something they had been forced to study at the last minute.

But the city?

Lucian and many members of Dominion knew it well.

Tonight... she’s going to close this Chapter of her life, he thought, the words settling in his mind like a promise.

Tonight... she’s going to be free from all of this.

Meanwhile...

"What’s going on?!" Marshal blurted out, his words tumbling over one another. "This cannot be—I saw them! How did they know this place?!"

This mansion had only recently been acquired, while the decoy mansion had been in his possession for years.

Besides, their plan had been brilliant!

How could those people possibly know about it?

And who were the people at the decoy mansion?

Had his enemies sent men to both properties?

Marshal’s thoughts abruptly halted when their vehicle bounced violently over a bump.

"Ack—!" His head slammed against the side, and he instantly glared at Scott. "Scott!"

"Wear your seatbelt, sir," Scott answered grimly, keeping his eyes on the windshield and the narrow path cutting through the woods. "It’s going to be a rough ride."
