The guard didn’t wait for me to agree. He reached out and snagged my upper arm with a hand that felt like a set of industrial pliers. His fingers dug deep into my skin, right through the thin lace of my sleeve, and he yanked me forward.

“Wait-“I stumbled, my heels skidding on the slick floor. “I… I have to get my bag. My friend, she’s waiting for me. I can’t just ”

“Shut up,” the guard stated.

He didn’t even look back at me. He just kept walking, dragging me through the wall of people like I was a piece of trash he was clearing out of the way.

“Please,” I tried again, my voice trembling. The letters in my head were screaming, a bright red mess of R-U-N and H-I-D-E, “I don’t do private rooms. I told the boss. I told him I don’t touch. I need to leave. I’m sick, I think I’m going to be sick-”

“You’ll be a hell of a lot sicker if I have to tell you to move again,” he snapped. He turned a corner, pulling me into a long, dim hallway where the music from the club became a muffled thumping like a heart beating behind a wall.

He didn’t listen to a word I said. Every excuse I threw at his back just seemed to bounce off.

We stopped in front of a dark wood door. The guard reached out, twisted the handle, and shoved me inside. I wasn’t ready for it. I flew forward, my feet tangling, and I hit the carpeted floor with a soft thud.

Slam!

The door clicked shut behind me. I scrambled to my feet, my heart hammering against my teeth. I lunged for the handle and yanked on it.

Nothing.

I twisted it, pulled it, threw my whole weight against the wood, but it didn’t budge. The heavy thunk of the lock echoed in the small space. I was trapped.

I spun around, my back pressed against the cold door, my eyes wide and stinging.

It wasn’t a normal room. It was built for one thing only. The walls were covered in black that seemed to soak up all the light. A low, golden glow came from hidden lamps in the ceiling, making everything look hazy and warm. In the center of the room was a wide, circular bed, piled high with silk pillows.

To my left, a wall was made entirely of glass, showing the dance floor below, but it was tinted so dark that I knew no one could see it. Then I looked up and noticed the entire ceiling had mirrors. It felt like being inside a jewel box. A small bar sat in the corner, filled with crystal bottles.

Everything was designed to make a person forget the world outside existed.

I scanned the darkness, my breath coming in short gasps. I expected to see him. I expected to see Raphael sitting in a chair, waiting to tear my mask off and tell me I was basically dead. I expected to see his light brown eyes burning through me.

But the room was empty.

There was no one on the bed, no one at the bar. I stood there in my silver wig and my lace mask, shivering in the heat of the room.

I stayed there, my spine pressed hard against the locked wood of the door. My hands were still shaking, but my skin… my skin felt like it was humming.

I could still feel his thighs beneath me. I could still feel the way his hard, heavy muscles had twitched/under my

touch.
