Chapter 243
Gianna
Neither of us heard the footsteps. Neither of us noticed the shadow stretching across the terrace until the glass door creaked on its tracks.
“What are you two doing out here?”
The voice was like a bucket of ice water. We both snapped our heads toward the sound, the breath catching in my throat as the world rushed back in.
Vincenzo stood there in the doorway, his eyes moving back and forth between me and Raphael. I felt the blood drain from my face, leaving me cold and shaky. My heart suddenly started thumping so hard I was sure he could see it vibrating against my thin shirt.
I felt exposed, like the word guilty was written in neon lights across my forehead. I felt like I smelled like Raphael like my hair was too messy, and like every bruise he had just covered was glowing through my clothes.
Raphael, on the other hand, didn’t even blink. He adjusted his glasses and looked at his brother with a face as smooth as stone, acting like we were just discussing the weather.
Then, a hurricane slammed into Vincenzo’s back. Claire poked her head out, her arms wrapping tight around her husband’s waist. She looked at us with a wide, curious grin.
“Oh, hey!” she chirped, “Work buddies hanging out?”
“We’re not work buddies,” I blurted out. The words came out too fast, too loud, and way too defensive. I saw Claire’s eyebrows shoot up. “I mean… we aren’t any kind of buddies, really. We were just… it’s nothing. Just talking.”
I sounded like a total mess. Every word out of my mouth made it feel like I was screaming, “I just had sex with my stepbrother!”
