“What?” I asked, my voice coming out small and shaky.

“Did you think about it?” he asked, “About signing those papers?”

I blinked, confused, “What papers?”

“To officially change your last name to Capone,” he said. He didn’t sound like he was joking. “I’ve been thinking about it. It’s the right move for you, and for us, in the long run. If you do this, I can take better care of you. I can protect you properly in case…” He trailed off, his jaw tightening as if he was holding back something.

I felt a chill run down my spine, “In case what?”

“In case something happens,” he said, “Life is unpredictable, Gianna. Things change fast. If you’re a Capone on paper, no one can touch you.”

I stared at him, my mind racing. He was talking like there was a timer counting down that I couldn’t see.

I felt a prickle of heat on the side of my face. I didn’t have to look to know Raphael was watching.

Slowly, I shifted my gaze past Claire’s shoulder to where Raphael stood. He looked perfectly still, his hands tucked into his pockets, but his eyes were sharp. As our gazes locked, he gave me a single, nearly invisible shake of his head.

It was so fast and so tiny that if I hadn’t been looking for it, I would have missed it.

He didn’t want me to be a Capone. He didn’t want the sibling tie that would make what we were doing even more twisted than it already was.
