Chapter 245
Just then, the door swung open and Silvio himself walked in. As he walked past my chair, he reached out and ruffled my hair, messing it up completely. “G-man! Good to see you’re alive.”
Silvio slumped into his chair next to Raphael, flashing me a big, goofy smile.
“Hi, Silvio,” I said, smoothing down my hair with a small laugh.
As I smiled, my eyes drifted across the table to Raphael. The perfect businessman look was still there, but his face had turned into a dark mask. Raphael was staring at me. He had this deep, dark frown on his face, his eyes fixed on the spot where Silvio’s hand had touched my head.
“Raph, man, speaking of being trashed,” Dante piped up again, “Do you remember that Russian girl from the club in Vegas? The one with the crazy eyes? You were so gone you thought she was a literal spy. Remember the thing you did with the-”
“I don’t,” Raphael snapped, “I don’t remember the girl, and I don’t remember the night. Shut the fuck up, Dante.
Adriano started howling with laughter. I looked at Raphael, and he looked murderous. He looked like he wanted to erase that story and maybe everyone at the table from existence.
The breakfast ended in total chaos. The room emptied out as everyone rushed toward their own lives. Raphael left for office without a word. Claire headed out for her art gallery, and Maddie left for college. The brothers vanished to handle whatever dark, illegal business they had planned for the day, and Jules headed off to school.
All that was left in the quiet of the morning was me and my mother.
And we spent the whole day together after ages. I spent most of the afternoon tucked into the corner of the sofa with Mom. I leaned back, resting my head in her lap just like I used to when I was little. Her fingers moved through my hair, that made my eyes feel heavy.
