“Is everything alright?” I asked, “When you interrupt a meeting without warning,” I said quietly, “I generally assume somebody has been shot.”

That finally earned a reaction. The corner of Vincenzo’s mouth moved just enough to almost become a smile.

He kept looking out across the city, “No, no emergency.”

I studied him, “Then why are you here?”

He walked toward my desk before placing both hands against the wood, “When Hazel dies… she expects me to look after her daughters.”

He didn’t say if.

He said when.

“She trusted me with them but trust means responsibility and I don’t fail responsibilities.”

I nodded once, “I know.”

He pulled a thin folder from beneath his arm and dropped it onto the desk, “I intend to keep that promise whether Gianna agrees with me or not.”

I understood exactly what he meant. Vincenzo didn’t view protection as permission, he viewed it as obligation.

“If someone I care about is walking toward traffic,” he said quietly, “I don’t ask if they’d like to move. I drag them out of the road. Hazel asked me for something…”

I opened the file and read its content.

“Gianna’s been spending time with filth she should’ve never laid eyes on again,” his mouth twisted with open disgust, “Women who sell themselves for a stack of cash and the parasite pimp living off their backs.”

He looked back at me.

“They encouraged Gianna when she was barely old enough to understand what they were pushing her toward. They wanted her painted up, half-naked under stage lights, smiling for old bastards with enough money to buy another girl’s future when she was just seventeen.”

His jaw clenched.

“They would’ve happily watched every piece of innocence get stripped off her as long as somebody was throwing bills. Leeches. Parasites. Every last one of them.”

His fingers tapped once against the folder.
