I sat curled up on the couch with my phone in my hand, staring at the screen.

I frowned and immediately hit redial. Mama D always answered. Always. Even if she was busy. Even if she couldn’t talk. Even if she was in the middle of screaming at one of the girls.

The second she found out about Mom, she had started checking on me almost every day. The call went to voicemail again.

My eyebrows pulled together. I stared at the screen. Then I tried Mama D again, Voicemail again.

The knot in my stomach tightened, maybe they were all together, maybe they were out somewhere working.

I hated maybe.

I looked down at the screen and typed out a quick message.

My fingers drummed against my knee. For months those women had somehow managed to actively check on me whether I was visiting them or not.

Mama D especially. She called constantly, asked for my pictures, and sent voice notes.

Silence wasn’t normal.

I looked down at my phone again, still nothing. My stomach twisted, across the room Mom sat in her wheelchair beside the large window. Sunlight spilled across her blanket and the wheelchair still didn’t look real.

Every time I saw it my brain rejected it.

Mom belonged everywhere… in the kitchen, in the garden, walking through the house, not sitting in a wheelchair.

She looked smaller somehow. She had lost a lot of weight, the thought made my chest hurt. Salvatore sat beside her with several papers spread across the coffee table.
