My Stepbrother's Dirty Little Secret novel Chapter 661

Chapter 661

I glanced over my shoulder. Luca stood several feet away, watching us without interrupting. His expression gave nothing away.

I looked back at Giovanni, “You’ll have the opportunity to earn her trust. You won’t have the opportunity to abuse it.”

Giovanni let out a slow breath, “You’ve already decided I’m going to disappoint her.”

I didn’t answer immediately. I studied him instead. Everything about him told me he was disciplined, and dangerous. Everything about my instincts told me not to trust him.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

There was something about him that kept every instinct inside me alert but this wasn’t about me. It was about Gianna. And if seeing her father was something she needed…

I’d make sure she had that chance.

Even if every instinct I had told me to keep him as far away from her as possible.

“I think grief makes people reach for things they’ve wanted their entire lives and right now, she’s grieving. So until she can think clearly again, everyone around her answers to me. Even you.”

Giovanni couldn’t hide the faint smile that touched the corner of his mouth, “You’re more protective of her than I expected.”

Get out a dry laugh, “Hazel trusted us and I simply understand that broken people are easiest to influence. I’m making sure no one-not even her father-mistakes her grief for permission.”

I stepped aside, creating just enough space for him to walk past me.

“This meeting is over.”

He didn’t move immediately, “So I wait.”

“Yes, Don Capone will contact you within the next few hours. And tomorrow, if my brother is satisfied with the arrangements… you’ll see your daughter.”

He accepted that without argument, “And if he isn’t?”

“Then tomorrow doesn’t happen.”

For the first time since he’d arrived, Giovanni looked almost disappointed, “I’ve waited years.”

“You can wait a few more hours.”

Defeatedly, he inclined his head, “I’ll answer Don Capone’s call.”
