The man let out a high-pitched scream that bounced off the damp concrete walls. His legs kicked wildly. His eyes rolled back into his head, his chest heaving as if his lungs were collapsing.

Seven seconds.

I cut the power.

He fell forward against the straps, gasping, coughing, and crying like a child. Wet tears and sweat dripped off his chin onto his ruined gray suit.

“Don’t lie to me again,” I said softly, “You don’t just carry boxes without knowing who is running the show. Give me a name. Who is in charge of that island? Who controls the supply line?”

“I don’t know!” he shrieked, “I don’t know the whole family! I don’t see the big bosses! Please, turn it off!

Please!”

I rested my hand on the laptop again, “Give me a name or I double the voltage.”

“Wait! Wait!” he screamed, his whole body shaking with pure terror, “I don’t know everyone! I only know the man who runs the facility on the west side! The doctor!”

My eyes narrowed. Every nerve in my body went taut. “What doctor? What is his name?”

“The head of the facility!” he choked out, struggling to catch his breath, staring at me with desperate, wide eyes. “He takes all the drug shipments! He runs the whole building! He’s the one who signs off on

the orders!”

“Give me his name,” I said.

“Dr. Vance!” the man sobbed out, spilling the words as fast as he could. “Dr. Arthur Vance! That’s his name! I swear on my life, that’s all I know! Dr. Vance!”

Dr. Arthur Vance.

I stood up slowly, looking down at the broken, sobbing man tied to the chair. I reached out and tapped the key on my keyboard one last time.

A sharp, violent wave of electricity surged straight through the wires, hitting his nerve endings like a wall of pure fire.

The man’s spine snapped straight back against the metal frame of the chair. A loud, shrill scream tore out of his throat, echoing hard against the concrete walls. His legs kicked wildly against the floor, his entire body shuddering, twitching, and shaking under the sudden, blinding shock.

Ten seconds.

I cut the power.

His head flopped forward, his lungs dragging in desperate gulps of cold air. Saliva and tears dripped off

his chin, soaking into the ruined collar of his shirt. He was trembling so hard the whole chair rattled against the ground.

“Please…” he wept, his voice completely broken, barely louder than a whisper. “Please… I gave you… the name…”

I closed the lid of my laptop and then I stepped in close, leaning down until my mouth was right beside his ear.

“I am going to keep you here in this basement for a while,” I said, “Because who knows? Once I start pulling on this thread, I might need you again.”

He let out a weak, helpless sob, his eyes rolling back in terror as he realized he wasn’t going anywhere.

I stood up to my full height and turned toward the dark corner of the room, Luca stepped out from the shadows, his hands resting casually in his pockets, his dark eyes fixed on the weeping man bound to the

chair.

I looked at my brother and gave him a single nod, “My brother will take it from here,” I said, as I picked up his briefcase from the table, “I have a feeling we can get a whole lot more out of you before the night is

done.”

I had spent hours walking beside my father, sitting through conversations, looking at files, listening to him explain the world he wanted me to step into.

But the one thing I needed…

The one thing I came back for…

I never got.

Every time I tried to bring up Dr. Vance, every time I thought I was finally getting close to asking what happened, Dad found a way to move the conversation somewhere else.
