Gianna

I lunged for my phone again, “Give it to me!” Leone moved it out of reach. I grabbed his sleeve with both hands and pulled, “Leone, give me my fucking phone!”
He didn’t answer, his eyes were still on the screen, on Raphael’s messages, on the hundreds of photographs I had
sent.
My evidence.
I reached for it again. Leone caught my wrist. I twisted hard, trying to break free.
“Let go!”
“Gianna.”
“Give it back!”
I clawed at his hand, kicked at his shin, tried to wrench my arm free but nothing worked. He caught my other wrist too while I fought like an animal trapped in a cage.
His face tightened, “I’m trying to keep you from making this worse.”
I glared at him, “You both already made it worse!”
I yanked myself forward, the phone slipped slightly in his hand. My fingers brushed the edge, I grabbed it and for one second, I had it. Then Leone pulled back, the phone tore from my fingers.
“NO!”
I threw myself at him. He caught my shoulders and shoved me backward. I hit the desk. Pain shot through my spine but I barely felt it.
I pushed myself upright and went for him again, “Give it back!”
He raised the phone above his head. I jumped, my fingers missed it again. He caught my wrist and held me away from him.
“You’re going to hurt yourself.”
“I don’t give a fuck!” I kicked toward him again, desperation burning through every inch of me, “Give me my phone!”
Leone’s face hardened as he looked toward Dad, “They know too much already. She sent him everything.”
Dad looked like he didn’t even care. His eyes stayed on me as if I was a mere inconvenience, “The Capones can’t do anything with what she sent,” he said calmly, “They can’t move against us without putting themselves in the Council’s crosshairs. The moment they make a move, the Council will tear them apart. We have the numbers. We have the power. We have the support of the other four families. They won’t risk their entire family for this.”
Something changed in Leone’s face as more messages flashed on the screen, one after another. And I knew where this was going, he looked at the phone and closed his fist around it.
My stomach dropped, “Leone…”

A crack split the room. I froze. He squeezed harder. The screen fractured beneath his hand.
“No. No!”
I lunged for it, but Leone jerked his hand out of reach. The phone twisted in his grip…The screen flickered once before going completely black.
My stomach dropped.
That phone had been my only way out. My only way to reach Raphael. My only way to warn the Capones before they came for me.
“You…” my voice disappeared halfway.
Leone released the broken phone. It hit the floor. The sound was small but it felt like someone had ripped my heart out.
I dropped beside it, “No…”
My fingers hovered over the shattered screen. I touched it. I pressed the button but nothing happened.
“No, no, no…”
I picked it up with shaking hands, the screen was spiderwebbed from one corner to the other. I pressed the button again.
My only link to Raphael was gone.
My eyes burned as I slowly lifted my head. The rage inside me had swallowed everything else. I looked at Dad, and whatever love I had once carried for him was gone beneath the hatred burning in my chest.
He was still standing there, still watching. He hadn’t moved, he hadn’t stopped Leone, he hadn’t even tried. He had simply stood there and watched.
