Chapter 798
A hospital without patients.
A hospital without humanity.
I looked around slowly, “What the fuck is this?”
One of the guards walked ahead and opened a door, “Inside.”
It was a small office with a desk, two chairs, a filing cabinet, a computer and a single fluorescent light buzzing above my head.
Leone pointed inside, “Stay here.”
I looked at him, “For how long?”
“Until someone comes for you.”
“Who?”
His expression hardened, “You do realize we wouldn’t even be in this fucking situation if it weren’t for you?” he snapped, “And now we’ve got a bunch of pissed-off Dons breathing down our necks because of it.”
He stepped back toward the door, his eyes never leaving mine.
“Don’t try anything.”
“Go to hell!”
The door closed, a lock clicked and I waited. Footsteps moved down the corridor and I listened until they faded. Then I slowly turned toward the desk and looked for something sharp.
A letter opener sat beside a stack of papers. My heart began beating harder. I moved toward it. The restraints were still tight behind my back. I reached blindly across the desk, my fingers searching until they found the metal handle.
I gripped it.
For several seconds, I simply stood there, then I turned my wrists and brought the edge against the restraint. I worked the blade back and forth, the material resisted. I stopped whenever footsteps passed outside, then
continued.
My wrists burned, my shoulders ached but I kept going and then finally, it snapped. My hands separated, and I nearly gasped. I caught the broken restraint before it hit the floor. I rubbed my wrists, staring at the red marks around them.
I looked at the letter opener, then I slipped it into my pocket. I didn’t know what was waiting outside that room but I knew I wasn’t going to wait for Vance to come find me.
I opened the door a fraction, the hallway was empty. I stepped outside, closed the door behind me without making
a sound. 1
The corridor stretched in both directions, I chose the left, every few steps, another door appeared, some had small windows, some didn’t.
I passed one and stopped, there was a sound coming from inside. A low mechanical hum, I looked through the glass and saw a chair in the center of the room.

Exactly like the one I used to sit in when I was little, straps were fixed across it, around the chair were machines, wires, screens, metal trays.
I backed away.
One by one, I checked all the rooms, there were more strange equipment, a bed surrounded by restraints, table beneath a bright surgical lamp.
My stomach twisted but I kept walking. The deeper I went, the quieter the building became, then I found a stairwell.
A red emergency light glowed above the door.
I looked behind me, and found nothing, so I opened it and saw stairs disappeared downward.
I started walking, one small step at a time. The smell of disinfectant grew weaker and something else replaced it A stale, heavy smell that made my stomach turn.
I reached the bottom, the door opened into another corridor, but this one wasn’t white. The walls were gray, the lights were dimmer.
And there were… cages?
I stopped breathing.
Glass cages?
Thick glass panels lined both sides of the corridor, behind them were beds, small beds.
My feet stopped moving, “No.”
