Wilbur shifted the car back into gear. He pressed the gas pedal much more smoothly this time, his voice practically floating. "Then drop it. You don't need to go."
"Because Noreen doesn't need your help."
He proceeded to explain exactly why she was perfectly fine on her own.
After learning the truth, Claire's immediate reaction was sheer relief. She patted her chest, exhaling deeply. "Thank God I ran into you! Otherwise, I would have made a massive mistake today!"
Wilbur had been steering the car with lazy nonchalance, but at her words, his hands subtly paused on the wheel.
It felt as if something soft had just bumped against his heart.
He didn't reply right away. The habitual, mocking curve of his lips melted away, replaced by a faint but profoundly genuine sense of joy.
Right on cue, Felix called.
Claire answered.
He asked where she was.
Claire didn't miss a beat. "I thought about it, and we should definitely get a divorce."
Felix was speechless.
Even though backing out at the last second felt a bit unethical.
Claire was simply too relieved to care, so she offered a quick apology. "Sorry for making you come all this way for nothing."
Felix remained dead silent for several seconds before his voice rumbled through the speaker. "Is the percentage too low? I can offer more."
"If ten percent isn't enough, I'll give you twenty."
Claire was momentarily stunned.
Twenty percent?
That was an insane amount of money...
He only held fifty-one percent of the company to begin with, yet he was willing to hand over nearly half of his own shares just to keep her.
But she still turned him down.
"It's not about the money. Just pretend I never called you last night. I'm sorry."
Without giving him a chance to argue, she ended the call.
Wilbur had listened to the entire exchange, and his smile only grew wider.
Once she hung up, he threw her a teasing sideways glance. "So, where to now?"
