She took the fire escape stairs down a level, then caught the elevator to the ground floor.

Seth had already gotten out of his car and was waiting for her.

Seeing her in only her evening gown, he immediately took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders. "Why did you run out here? It's freezing."

"Didn't you say you weren't cold?" Noreen countered, throwing his own words back at him.

"I was wearing a coat."

"Isn't your coat on me right now?"

Seth couldn't win an argument with her. "Don't you need to entertain your guests?"

"Claire is covering for me." She carefully pulled out the slice of cake she had brought. "I came to bring you some cake."

Seeing the cake, Seth raised an eyebrow slightly in the dark.

The gloom that had hung over him all night vanished in an instant.

"Try it," Noreen urged, offering the cake to him.

But she had been in such a rush to find him that she forgot to grab a fork.

Seth arched an eyebrow, his gaze shifting from the cake to the spot of frosting on her fingertip. He dragged out his words deliberately. "My hands are a bit stiff from the cold. Since Miss Gilmore brought it all this way, why not go the extra mile and feed me?"

"Seth, how old are you?" Noreen shot him an exasperated glare, muttering about how childish and demanding he was, but she naturally leaned in closer anyway.

She scooped up a bit of frosting and a bright red strawberry with her index finger, carefully bringing it to his lips.

Seth lowered his head slightly, taking the bite of cake from her finger. His warm breath brushed against her skin, sending a subtle tingle through her hand.

He chewed slowly, his predatory gaze locked onto her face, his eyes as dark and deep as an endless night.

"How is it?"

Noreen withdrew her hand, feeling slightly self-conscious, but she tried to act indifferent.
