Mrs. Naylor was in an excellent mood, beaming from ear to ear. "The very first time I met Noreen, I knew she was something special. She had incredible vision, spoke with total composure, and not only is she stunning, but she's brilliant too. I just absolutely adored her."
"I practically pushed my foolish son to go after her back then, but he just couldn't seal the deal."
Whenever this topic came up, Mrs. Naylor couldn't hide her bitter regret.
"If Healy had managed to win her over, Naylor Automotive Group would be untouchable right now. A marriage between them would have been the ultimate power alliance."
"You're absolutely right," Mrs. Naylor sighed again. "I blame my son for not trying hard enough. He just didn't catch her eye."
A lady beside her quickly offered a comforting word. "Well, Miss Vance is quite lovely as well."
Mrs. Naylor nodded politely.
But another socialite chimed in with a very calculated, ambiguous tone. "This Miss Vance... she comes from quite a complicated background, doesn't she?"
Mrs. Naylor paused with her teacup mid-air. "Complicated?"
The woman was just about to elaborate.
Gia pushed the door open, cutting the conversation dead.
The woman who was about to spill the gossip immediately snapped her mouth shut.
Mrs. Naylor warmly waved Gia over and introduced her to the visiting guests.
She then asked Gia to help pick out her jewelry for tomorrow's gala.
Gia examined the pieces carefully. "This understated set is beautiful. It looks very youthful."
Mrs. Naylor felt it was a bit too plain, but since Gia had suggested it, she nodded gracefully. "It is very elegant."
"You reap what you sow. Because she is so brilliant and genuine, everyone is naturally drawn to protect her."
Gia held her bone-china teacup, her knuckles white, practically threatening to shatter the delicate rim.
Every single word of their glowing praise for Noreen drilled straight into her ears.
Every compliment felt like a needle violently shoved into her deepest insecurities.
Her polite smile was cracking, so she lowered her head and took a sip of tea, using the motion to hide her trembling lips.
The tea was scalding hot, but it did nothing to suppress the sickening wave of jealousy rising in her chest.
What gave Noreen the right?
Why did she get to have absolutely everything?
