Never Mistake a Queen for a Lapdog novel Chapter 709

Noreen had only planned to drop off the syrup and leave, so she didn't stay long at the Harcourt residence. As the sound of her car's engine faded into the distance, Seth stepped out from behind the second-floor curtains.

The room was dark, the lights off, completely shrouding him in shadows. He lowered his eyes, the veins on the back of his hands standing out as the rims of his eyes turned red.

Evelyn knocked on his door, her voice full of concern. "Seth, please come down and eat a little more. You barely touched your food earlier."

Not wanting to worry her, Seth agreed.

Ten minutes later, when he came downstairs, his face was a mask of calm. Evelyn had reheated the food, but Seth still only picked at it.

Evelyn hesitated before saying, "When Noreen was here, she brought a little girl with her. She said… she's her daughter."

Seth's hand, which was lifting a spoonful of soup, froze.

"The girl looked to be around ten or so. A bit thin, but very pretty. She has Noreen's eyes."

Seth didn't hear anything else Evelyn said. His mind, already in turmoil, was now completely chaotic.

"I'm heading out," he said, putting down his chopsticks and grabbing his jacket.

"You're not staying the night?" Evelyn asked.

"Not tonight."

Evelyn wanted to say more, but Seth had already opened the door and left.

"Then what are you doing here?" And sitting here all night, no less.

Seth didn't look at him, his gaze still fixed on the lake. After a long pause, he asked Jude, "What do you think Noreen threw into the lake five years ago?"

That question stumped Jude. He wasn't a mind reader; how could he possibly know what Noreen had thrown into the lake five years ago?

"Isn't it a little late to be asking about something that happened five years ago?" Jude blurted out, regretting it instantly.

Seth murmured, "Yeah, it's too late."

"That's not what I meant," Jude said quickly. "I meant, you should have tried to get it out when it happened five years ago."
