"Seth, stop waiting. Noreen isn't coming."
Jude thought Noreen was being downright ruthless.
Seth lowered his eyes, hiding his disappointment, and finally walked out of the hospital.
It was raining again. Late autumn in Rivercrest City was always misty and damp, soaking a chill straight into the bone.
Jude went to get the car, telling Seth to wait at the entrance and stay out of the rain.
The hospital entrance was always bustling, regardless of the season. A little girl carrying a flower basket shyly walked up to him. "Hello."
Seth looked down at her. She was about six or seven, with two little braids. Her eyes were beautiful. Like Noreen's.
Seth stared in a daze, his mind wandering. If he and Noreen's baby had lived, would they be this old by now? If it were a girl, she would probably look just like her. With eyes just as bright.
"I'll take all the flowers," Seth said, hurriedly pulling out his phone. He paused when he realized she probably didn't have a phone to take digital payment. He crouched down to her eye level. "I don't have cash on me. Can you wait two minutes? I'll go get some for you."
The little girl shook her head. "These flowers are for you."
"For me?" Seth looked confused.
The little girl nodded. "A pretty lady already paid for them. She told me to give them to you."
"A lady? Where is she?" Seth frantically whipped his head around, searching the crowd for a familiar silhouette.
But the girl told him, "She already left."
