Emma tilted her head to dodge his touch, only to realize his fingers looked gentle but held her in place like a steel clamp.

“You want to lock me up?” She stared at Clarence, anger flashing in her eyes.

“Shh.” He lifted a finger and pressed it lightly to her lips, signaling her to be quiet. “No need to make it sound so ugly. Think of it as… getting to know each other better.”

He straightened and looked down at her from above. Then he calmly adjusted the thin gold–rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose. The lenses caught the light and flashed with a cold glint. “Little Emma, do not test my patience. I am not Jim. I will not nod along to everything you say.”

After that, he turned and walked to the table nearby. He picked up a delicate silver bracelet. “Relax. I may not let you leave, but I have no intention of actually hurting you.” His tone stayed unhurried. “What I prefer is winning you over mentally. I want you to choose to bond with me.”

He came back with the metal bracelet in his hand. “Honestly, I was not planning to put this on you. It is not exactly pretty. It ruins the clean line of your wrist.”

Emma looked at the metal bracelet, and a bad feeling crept into her chest. “What is that?” she asked.

“A little gadget.” Clarence leaned down close to her ear and whispered. His voice was low like a demon murmuring in the dark. “Once you wear it, if you move more than ten meters away from me, it will trigger an alarm. I will know immediately. And once it is on, no one can take it off unless I personally unlock it.”

As he spoke, he took hold of her wrist. “You will have to put up with this for now. I admit this version is not very attractive. Give me some time, and I will make you a nicer one.”

She tried to pull her hand back. She tugged once, but his grip did not budge. Emma looked at him and quietly took a breath to steady herself. When she spoke again, her voice turned soft and fragile. “Even without that thing, we could still build a relationship.”

If she had the strength to beat him, she would have twisted his head clean off already. But right now, playing weak was the only move she had.

“I hate wearing anything on my wrists. I really do not like that thing.” She looked at him. “Clarence, I promise I will work on building a relationship with you. So maybe we can skip the bracelet.”

The moment Emma said she did not want to wear it, Clarence’s expression turned icy. “Don’t use that sweet little act you use on Jim on me. You fell into the hands of a freak like me. You don’t got the luxury of saying no.”

As soon as he finished speaking, he lifted his hand. The metal bracelet snapped shut around Emma’s wrist.

Emma’s expression grew darker by the second, and Clarence looked even more amused. “Alright. You just woke up. Your body is still weak. You need proper nutrition.”

He clapped his hands.

A silent seam split open along the wall, revealing a hidden door. Several mechanical puppets walked in, their bodies completely devoid of life. Each carried an elegant tray. The trays were filled with bottles of nutrient fluid in different flavors.

The puppets approached with smooth, natural movements. They looked almost human. Nothing about their motions seemed stiff or mechanical. They set the trays down in front of Emma.

“Pick whichever flavor of nutrient fluid you like,” Clarence said as he sat down in a nearby chair. He rested his chin on one hand and watched her with clear amusement.

“If you don’t feel like choosing, that’s fine too. I can pick one for you. I could even feed it to you myself.” As he spoke, his gaze lingered on her lips for a moment. He looked as if he were seriously considering a very personal way to feed her.

A chill ran down Emma’s spine. “No thanks! I’ll drink it myself!”

Right now, the smart move is to play along.

She grabbed a random bottle of nutrient fluid, opened it, and drank it down.

“That’s more like it.” After watching her finish the nutrient fluid, Clarence stood up and walked over to her.

“As long as you behave and do what I say, I’ll treat you very well. After all…” He nudged his glasses up the bridge of his nose and gave a soft laugh. “We’re going to bond.”
