Emma looked at the floofball that was Jim, who was resting on her palm.

Her brain was still recalibrating from the shock.

Meanwhile, Jim’s eyes had never left her face ever since his transformation, growing more nervous with every passing second.

It was as if he were waiting for the guillotine to fall, taking his neck with it. Emma probably hates me because of my ugly beast form… he thought sadly.

Emma noticed Jim wilting in real–time, taking in the way he seemed to melt into a puddle of black despair. Her heart ached at the sight of him so down. Who could ever resist him like this?

She didn’t care what he was. All she knew was that he was way too adorable to be real.

She couldn’t help but gently poke his fluffy head with a finger.

Honestly, he felt rather strange to the touch.

The fur on Jim didn’t seem like actual fur. Instead, the sensation traveling up from her finger to her brain translated to something cool and silky. However, he was definitely as soft as a cloud.

Emma couldn’t resist applying slightly more pressure, feeling her finger sink into the black floof that was Jim.

“Jim…” she started, raising him in his black poofy glory to eye–level.

Jim didn’t dare look into her eyes. He was afraid of seeing disdain and disgust in them.

So, he lowered his head and let out a low meep, “Yes?”

Due to his coloring and his size, it was impossible for Emma to get a good read on him.

Thus, she didn’t notice his nerves at all.

Besides, her heart was overwhelmed by his cuteness. So, she was rather preoccupied as she tried to get her heart to settle. Be still, my beating heart!

Fortunately, she managed to force her rationality to take the wheel. She tried to sound solemn as she inquired, “Jim, is this what you meant by ominous and ugly?”

Frankly, she couldn’t believe he had the gall to call himself ugly and ominous when he looked so adorable!

There had to be something wrong with his sight.

Still, she noticed that the black puff ball in her palm visibly stiffened upon hearing her question.

The only reason she couldn’t feel it was likely because he was so teeny.

“Yes.” Jim nodded, his response dropping to a barely audible murmur filled with nothing but self–loathing

He knew that his beast form was hideous. So, he instinctively shrank into himself, causing his wispy tail to curl awkwardly during his attempt to hide away.

Unfortunately, his tail wasn’t a solid form. So, his tail shrank into a blob of black mist that still clung to his rear. “I’m a Voidbeast,” he whined miserably.

“A Voidbeast?” Emma frowned in confusion, drawing a complete blank.

Then again, the Interstellar Empire was so vast that there were likely all sorts of therians with strange beast forms out there. So, it wasn’t surprising that she’d run into some that she had never heard of in her life.

“Yeah.” Then, he continued, “The probable reason why you’ve never heard of my species is that… Well, we represent misfortune and death. Voidbeasts are born from the darkest abyss of the universe, and we’re a scarce breed. So, there are rarely any records about us.”

He lowered his gaze as soon as he caught her up to speed, not daring to look at her. “As I said before, my true form is massive.”

Jim hesitated before deciding to bite the bullet and come clean, saying, “What you’re seeing right now is my core. When I grow into my true form, the black mist around me will expand infinitely, turning into an abyss that could devour all.

“When I’m in that state, I really am larger than the size of a planet. That form of mine is hideous and horrifying… I look no different from a black hole.”

As his last word fell, he couldn’t help but hold his breath as he waited for the verdict.

His eyes shone with nothing but fear of rejection and anxiety as he stuttered, “A–Are you afraid of me now?”

He had just laid himself bare right before Emma.

He had just revealed to her that he was a vicious beast who could plunge the world into an eternal night if he didn’t check himself.

He had just told her that he was a Void beast that represented death and misfortune.

He had just shown her that he was a pitch–black beast without a single strand of color.

Even though he knew full well that he would never bring any misfortune or death to those around him and that his beast form was just ugly, he was… he was terrified that Emma would consider him a monster just like everyone

else.

The room fell into a pregnant silence.

Jim felt his heart turn colder and colder with each passing second. I should have known. I scared her… didn’t I?

He was just about to leap off Emma’s palm, transform back into his human form, and flee when he suddenly felt a warm sensation gently pressing against his forehead.

Emma had lowered her head and gave that ball of black fluff a big, hard smooch.

Jim immediately froze.

He was so shocked that he might as well have turned into stone. He was so out of it that even his wispy tail had exploded with a soft pop.

“Scared of you?” Emma smiled fondly as she looked at the dazed little beast in her palm, her fingers merrily pinching his twitching ears. “You’re adorable! Why would I be afraid?”
