The Windsors' visit without telling them first made one thing clear: they were determined to see York.
Wendy quickly instructed a maid to clean up the shattered glass on the floor.
York tried to leave, but Old Mr. Ferguson barked at him to stay put. Sewell then warned him to watch what he said in front of their guests.
Defeated, Peter helped York back to the sofa.
Once the mess was cleared, the old man told the butler to show the visitors in.
Marcia's parents, though middle-aged, were impeccably maintained and looked surprisingly young. Marcia herself was the picture of chic competence in a beige pantsuit, her cool-brown hair cut in a stylish bob. An expensive watch graced her left wrist.
After the elders exchanged pleasantries, Marcia walked directly to York.
"I heard you were injured while saving your ex-wife, Mr. Ferguson," she said. "My parents and I came to see how you are."
York remained seated on the sofa. "How did you find out?" he asked.
Marcia's father answered for her, his tone carrying a hint of accusation. "Mr. Cyrus was kind enough to inform us. Otherwise, the Windsor family would have been kept completely in the dark."
York glanced at Peter, and Peter instantly moved to help him to his feet.
"I need to get back to the hospital," York said. "Please, continue your conversation."
The Windsors had just sat down, and York's immediate attempt to leave was a clear slight. Their expressions soured.
"It seems you're not pleased to see us, Mr. Ferguson," Mrs. Windsor remarked.
Sewell quickly smoothed things over. "You jest, Mrs. Windsor. The boy and I were just having a disagreement. I had just given him a talking-to."
Peter chimed in, "Mr. Sewell Ferguson, York's injuries are serious, and he's been out of the hospital for quite a while now. He really needs to get back. You all can chat, and I'll just run him over."
Just as Peter was about to guide York away, Marcia stood up.
"As it happens, I need to pick up some medicine for my grandmother at the hospital," she said with a smile. "I can give Mr. Ferguson a ride."
