The sudden voice sent a jolt through Peter.
He turned his head and saw that York was awake on the bed. Peter cleared his throat.
Without a hint of a blush, he explained, "Darleen seemed to be snoring, so I leaned in to listen."
York closed his eyes in disgust.
Stirred by the noise, Darleen woke up. Seeing York covered with a white sheet, she let out a loud wail and burst into tears.
Peter, completely baffled, was startled again.
Before he could react, Darleen had thrown herself onto the bed, crying dramatically.
"Brother! My dear brother!"
"You're the only brother I have! The Ferguson Group is still waiting for you to make money! What are we going to do if you die?"
"So what if Claudia doesn't want you? You still have Mom, Dad, Grandpa, and me! How could you be so fragile? You just up and died!"
"Waaah..."
Darleen's performance left the two men in the room, one lying down and one standing, completely stunned.
Just as York was about to raise his arm to comfort her, she slammed a fist onto his stomach. "Brother, you haven't even told me your bank password yet! Waaah..."
York's legs went stiff with pain, and he nearly passed out on the spot.
"For God's sake, are you mourning at a grave?"
Peter forcibly pulled Darleen off York, quickly yanking away the white sheet and helping York sit up.
It took a while for Darleen to stop crying. When she opened her eyes and saw York was fine, she was a bit dazed. "Brother, you're not dead?"
Clutching his stomach, York's face darkened. "Go get your head checked."
Darleen pouted. "Peter, my brother called me an idiot."
Peter glanced at York. "She was just worried about you, York. Why would you say that to her?"
York retorted, "Weren't you the one who called her that?"
"Huh?"
Mark was completely dumbfounded.
Had he been fired for letting slip his boss's condition?
"Pick two of the best bodyguards from the Ferguson family's security team," York said. "From tomorrow on, you will be responsible for protecting my wife's safety."
Mark stammered, "Mr. Ferguson, I'm just a corporate drone. I'm afraid I'm not cut out for all that fighting and violence."
York's face darkened. "You just need to step in and handle any trouble or crises around her when necessary. I'm not asking you to kill anyone."
Setting aside his grandfather and father, there was also the new matriarch of the Quinn family, Ann's aunt, Shelly, who was no saint.
And then there were the Windsors.
Claudia was bound to run into trouble.
This was all because of him. He had a responsibility to clear away these hidden dangers and give her back her peaceful life.
