York stared at his phone screen.
He felt as if his body and soul were slowly separating, his mind drifting into a haze. It took several calls from his mother, Wendy, to bring him back.
York followed his mother's gaze to his grandfather. "Grandpa, what did you just say?"
Old Mr. Ferguson's face was grim. "York, business is war. As the CEO, every decision you make must be carefully considered. Terminating the contract with the Quinn family offers us nothing to gain and everything to lose. You've been running the Ferguson Group for years. How could you make such a rookie mistake?"
York stood up and methodically straightened his suit.
"Grandpa, the order has been given," he said. "If you have a problem with it, you can have the board remove me."
The patriarch was so stunned by York's ultimatum that he was left speechless, his face turning ashen.
Sewell, his father, pointed a finger at York, his voice rising in anger. "The entire Ferguson family business will be yours one day! Everything we do is for you!"
"Dad," York asked, his expression unreadable, "have you ever once thought about what kind of life I actually want?"
Father and son glared at each other for a few tense seconds before York, dragging his exhausted body, turned and left.
Wendy followed him to the door, worried. "York, I'm free tomorrow morning. Let me take you to the hospital for a check-up."
"I'm fine, Mom. You don't need to worry," York said, his tone as gentle as he could manage.
Wendy watched her son's lonely, dejected figure retreat, her heart aching with a helpless love.
Over an hour later, as he was leaving a pharmacy downtown, he saw Claudia's parents in the distance. The elderly couple was coming out of a supermarket, their hands full of groceries. They seemed to be struggling with the weight, so they set the bags down on the sidewalk to rest.
York was about to go over and help when he saw Rock Sayer jog across the street. Rock picked up several bags and accompanied Claudia's parents across the road.
York froze, unable to take another step. He knew Claudia's parents didn't want to see him, but he had wanted to help, to do something for them. But Rock Sayer had beaten him to it, doing the very thing York should have been doing, instantly making him feel redundant.
There had been so many similar moments lately. These instances, popping up everywhere, filled him with an overwhelming sense of powerlessness. This inability to do anything was driving him mad.
York didn't know how he made it home. He stood under the shower, letting the cold water shock him into clarity. But the clearer his mind became, the more pain he felt.
Around eight that evening, Peter came to see him.
