A day later, in Capital City.
At ten in the morning, in the CEO's office of the Ferguson Group.
An executive stopped Mark. "Assistant Mark, could you please take this document in for me?"
Mark hesitated for a moment before taking the file.
Ever since his boss had returned from Caledon, he had been like a different person. His seemingly stable mood could explode at any moment. He had already fired two people during the morning meeting alone. Everyone in the executive office was on edge.
Mark entered the office and braced himself. "Mr. Ferguson, Miss James is here to see you without an appointment."
York's hands hovered over his keyboard.
After a brief pause, he nodded. "Let her in."
York skillfully finished editing a wedding photo and then maximized it to fill the computer screen.
About ten minutes later, Ann walked into York's office, her heart pounding with excitement, only to find it empty.
"Please wait a moment, Miss James. Mr. Ferguson is in a meeting," Mark said before turning and leaving the office.
Ann ran her hands over the objects in York's office, her eyes shining with avarice. Poverty, she thought, truly did limit one's imagination. She never dreamed an office could be so large and luxurious. It was divided into several sections and even had a private resting suite.
She couldn't give up just like this. When York came in, she would pin all the blame on her mother, her brother, and her sister-in-law. She'd claim her family had threatened her and forced her hand. She had to find a way to convince him to help her keep the fact that she'd had a child a secret. If York softened toward her, maybe they still had a chance.
As if drawn by an unseen force, Ann approached York's desk. Her eyes, like a viper's, locked onto the woman's face in the wedding photo on the screen.
So this was York's fiancée. The bitch who had schemed to lure her back to the country and nearly gotten her thrown in jail. Once she dealt with her current predicament, she would make that bitch pay.
Around noon, Ann returned to her Aunt Selene's beauty salon.
When Selene came back, Ann asked cautiously, "Auntie, is Ethan all settled in?"
Selene locked the door and asked Ann, "Besides your mother, your brother, and your sister-in-law, who else knows that you brought the child back to the country?"
Ann shook her head. "No one else knows but them."
Originally, she had planned to use the child to make York feel guilty so that he would take her in. But before she could even bring it up, York had turned hostile.
Fortunately, she hadn't said a word.
Selene breathed a sigh of relief. She comforted Ann, saying, "I'll go talk to your mom, your brother, and his wife. I'll make things clear and tell them to keep this a secret for you. After a while, I'll find someone to help scrub your records. I can only help you marry into a wealthy family if your background shows you as unmarried and childless. Just pretend you never had this child."
