"I was just trying to explain that you and I are in the past, that I only came back for our child and wouldn't interfere in your marriage. But she wouldn't listen. She hit me and threatened to make me and my son disappear completely."
...
Ann noticed that York's attention had clearly drifted.
She stood up, grabbed his arm, and cried a river of tears. "York, I'm so scared. What are we going to do?"
York snapped back to the present and discreetly pulled his arm away. "Don't worry. As long as I'm here, you and your son will always have a place in Capital City."
After comforting Ann for a little while longer, York left in a hurry.
He knew it. Claudia had no real intention of divorcing him.
Her recent actions have been all over the place - one minute she's soft, the next she's tough, she's even thought about selling her mom's jewels to pay him back. It was all just a way of testing him.
That evening, around eight o'clock, Claudia was staring blankly into space in her room.
Her phone on the bed vibrated continuously.
Seeing York's name on the screen, Claudia hung up immediately.
A moment later, a text message popped up.
York: [I'll give you five minutes. If you don't come down, I'm coming up to get you.]
Hearing the sound of the television from the living room, Claudia hesitated for a moment before getting up to change.
Ever since she had moved back home, her parents had been taking care of her meticulously, without a single word of complaint. But she knew they were suffering.
She couldn't let York come upstairs and upset them further.
Using the excuse of going down to buy some drinks, Claudia went to the street across from her apartment complex.
It was cold and agonizing.
They had been childhood sweethearts for over twenty years.
And now, for that woman, he was threatening her—and even her parents.
York warned her again, "This is the last time I'm telling you. Do not go near Ann again. Otherwise, you'll have to face the consequences."
Claudia tilted her head back slightly, stubbornly fighting back tears.
"York," she said, "as long as you divorce me, I swear I will never bother them again!"
York grabbed her wrist, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Claudia, you don't have to keep testing my limits with this divorce talk. I know you don't want it. I can tolerate your recent tantrums, but you must accept the existence of Ann James and her son. You will learn to coexist peacefully with them."
His gaze locked on her face, searching for a reaction. "I'm going to Northaven on business for a week. I expect you to have moved back into our home and to understand your place by the time I get back."
