Ruth wondered if she didn't have to die. The new lawyer presented Xenia's death certificate and a paternity test result for the child.

Jeremy stood up. "Objection. The paternity test is false. The child is not a member of the Liddell family. I believe the prosecution has already verified the authenticity of the report."

It didn't matter whether Xenia was dead. Only the child's origin was important. As for the truth about Xenia's death, that would require a separate trial in the future. It wasn't relevant to the current case.

The judge accepted Jeremy's argument. When the final verdict was read, the courtroom rose to its feet.

Noelle kept her eyes on Ruth. When the judge pronounced a life sentence, she felt an odd sense of calm. Ruth smiled for a moment before a look of despair replaced it.

Noelle sneered at this.

Of course. Ruth had expected the death penalty and was desperately fighting to survive. She survived. Yet a lifetime of imprisonment wasn't much different from death.

After the verdict, Noelle turned to her. "You'll be atoning for your sins in prison for years to come. Don't even dream of enjoying the privileged life you used to know. The outside world has nothing to do with you anymore."

Ruth looked crushed. She instinctively turned her gaze toward Emma. But the latter only gave an indifferent look. "The Merlock family is bankrupt. Your eldest daughter is now hated by all for defending you.

"Your husband abandoned you. Do you think you can rely on your younger daughter? You schemed and manipulated your entire life and gained nothing in the end."

Noelle added coldly, "Well, you did get life in prison. That's karma for you."

Ruth was distraught. She was finally starting to realize how horrifying her future was going to be. She looked for her daughters, but neither of the Merlock sisters was present.
