Carl had assumed Noelle would never go diving again. Frank sighed. "She probably said that on purpose just to piss us off; you know how she is."
"Why the sudden change of heart?" Carl asked.
"I'm not sure. She might have decided to go diving after talking to the island staff. They recommended two of the best diving spots, one for sightseeing and the other for night beachcombing."
"Did she seem happy talking to them?"
Frank gave a bitter, helpless laugh. "Yeah, she did. She has a completely different expression when she talks to us, and sometimes, I envy those staff workers."
Noelle had always been kinder and warmer to strangers than her brothers.
"That's exactly why I want to change things," Carl remarked.
Frank didn't respond to that. Instead, he said, "Let's just arrange for her to go diving if she likes it. No point fighting her."
"Fine." Carl agreed easily. But after Frank left, he turned to Emery and said, "Forbid the staff from playing volleyball these nights."
The latter looked puzzled. "Why? Ms. Liddell enjoys it, and if she has someone she can talk to, she'll be less bored."
Carl clenched his fists and spat, "Why the hell do they matter? We're her family and the only important people in her life."
Emery instantly fell silent, stunned by how possessive Carl was over Noelle, his sister.
Deep down, he grumbled that this shouldn't be the way to fix a broken relationship, though he dared not say a word out loud. This was Carl's private family business, after all.
…
The next day, Noelle was excited and ready to go diving, but Carl told her the equipment hadn't arrived yet, so she'd have to wait another day.
She groaned at the thought of waiting an entire day. This boredom was seriously killing her now.
