Donovan wished to know who Noelle's backer was other than Alfred. Salena studied Donovan's face and realized he might have no idea. Her mood instantly lifted at the thought that Noelle might not have flaunted Cedric's identity to the Liddells.
This meant the conflict between Noelle and the Liddells was deeper than she'd imagined. That was good news. At least Donovan wouldn't take Noelle's side.
Donovan called out, "Mrs. Cantrell?"
Just then, Alfred approached with a casual smile. "Aunt Salena, the reporters you arranged sure asked some sharp questions. Do you have a problem with me?"
A single phone call was all he needed to find out who'd set up the questions. He was here to see if the hostility was aimed at him or Noelle.
The smile on Salena's face turned more genuine. "Many people think connections are the reason Noelle has the chance to speak on stage. But after today's test, we've seen her true abilities."
Still, Salena didn't believe it. She was convinced something had gone wrong, and Noelle must've gotten the questions in advance. That would explain her perfect answers.
Most likely, Alfred had helped behind the scenes. He was Cedric's best friend, after all.
Alfred glanced at Mia. "Don't bring Mia out when it's unnecessary, Aunt Salena. You should reconsider her matrilocal husband's character.
"Now that the engagement isn't finalized yet, taking him along isn't good for Mia's reputation."
"I'm fine, Alfred." Mia smiled sensibly. Because of her leg condition, the older children in her social circle gave her extra care.
Donovan was unsettled by Alfred's words. "If you have a problem with me, Mr. Parham, just say it outright. No need to beat around the bush."
Alfred bluntly answered, "Good that you know."
Donovan's expression turned ugly, while Xenia quickly stepped in. "Alfred, I know you've always disliked Donovan because of Noelle, but family conflicts aren't one-sided. Noelle must've done something wrong, too."
Realization dawned on Donovan as he added, "If you're mad at me because of Noelle, I have nothing to say."
