Mia refused, "That's not necessary. Cedric should dance with Noelle instead."
But Ruth wasn't about to let it go. "Mia, it is your birthday. I'm sure Ms. Liddell wouldn't mind, right?"
Noelle met Ruth's gaze and smiled. "I don't mind."
"See? Even Ms. Liddell said so. No need to be shy, Mia." Ruth's expression remained composed, but there was a cold glint in her eyes.
Mia kept glancing at Noelle and Cedric, flustered. She could tell Ruth had done this on purpose.
Of course, Cedric saw right through it as well. He turned to Mia. "Sorry, but I only want to dance with the girl I like tonight. But I can find you another dance partner."
"Am I late? Did I miss the cake?" Just then, Alfred strolled in, with Magnus following behind him.
Mia's eyes lit up. "Alfred, will you dance with me?"
"Of course! Can't let some other punks steal the chance, now can I?" Alfred was ever the smooth talker and didn't need an explanation. He stepped forward and offered his hand like a true gentleman.
As they moved to the dance floor, Alfred leaned in and asked, "What's going on? Give me the short version."
"Mrs. Merlock tried to push Cedric into dancing with me, leaving Noelle out." Mia had always been close to Alfred because of Salena, so she knew he would catch on quickly.
And he did. "I knew it. The Merlocks just won't quit."
He knew all too well that the Merlocks were masters at underhanded tactics. Meanwhile, Noelle watched as Mia and Alfred danced away, noticing that Ruth's expression had turned unpleasant.
