Luckily, Sean had been arrogant enough to stay put, believing the safest place to hide was right under their noses. That gave her just enough time to track him down.
"Noelle, where the hell are you going?" Frank called out, chasing after her. "I know you're angry with Donovan, but he is trying to make amends.
"None of this has been easy for us, either. Every day has felt like torture—so if you need our help, just say the word."
His voice carried a raw sincerity. It was obvious that guilt had clearly eaten at him—sleepless nights, restless days.
Noelle replied flatly, "I don't need anything from you right now. Like I said, when the time comes, I won't hesitate to ask."
"Then, at least let me drive you," Frank offered quickly. "Where are you headed?"
"That's not necessary," she replied as she shot him a pointed look. "And there's also no need to keep sending people to tail me. These childish games are pathetic."
Frank froze, then sighed. "That was Donovan's call. He just wanted to know what you're doing—he's worried something might happen. That's all."
They were just worried she would get hurt because the Merlocks were not exactly the kind of people you could casually take on.
"Where was that concern before?" Noelle's voice sharpened. "I handled the worst of it alone. And now, when everything's almost over, you want to play heroes? Don't you think that's a little pathetic?"
She did not bother hiding her disdain, knowing exactly why they were being so helpful all of a sudden. It was not just about avenging their parents; they clearly had another agenda—Sean.
"Noelle, that's not what we meant. We're still your family. No matter how many fights we've had, when it comes to our parents' deaths, we should be on the same side. You've been leaning on Mr. Greene this whole time, but what's that going to cost you?"
