Noelle went completely silent when she heard the news, and the excitement she'd just felt faded almost instantly.
Grace quickly jumped in, saying, "But this has nothing to do with Noelle! Clearly, Mrs. Merlock is manipulative, using her best friend in such a manner. Now, she's trying to pull another stunt. That's just low."
Mia nodded. "That's how the Merlocks operate. They love playing these games. And unfortunately, Mrs. Merlock got lucky because she's been tight with Mrs. Greene."
Noelle looked at Mia and asked, "So that's how the Merlocks have managed to cruise through everything all these years?"
Mia replied, "Exactly. But hey, Mrs. Merlock just happens to have insane luck."
Noelle frowned as she processed Mia's words. "Do you think Mrs. Merlock would hurt Mrs. Greene just to serve her own interests?"
"You know what, it wouldn't surprise me. The Merlocks are absolutely capable of something like that. But the Greene family is their only real support system, so I doubt they'd risk doing anything that reckless, especially not with Cedric in the picture."
Emma also had a sharp and capable son, Magnus, and a family backing her. If Ruth were really that foolish, she wouldn't have remained Emma's best friend for all these years.
Noelle finally let out a breath. "You're right... I guess I was just overthinking it."
She realized that Ruth's only lifeline was the Greene family. Grace looked at her. "So, Noelle, what do you plan to do now?"
"Exactly what I was doing before. I'm not stopping. I'll make sure the truth pays the price," Noelle replied as she lay back in bed.
Things had already reached this point, and she had no intention of backing down. Even if it meant upsetting Emma, disappointing her, or even being banned from seeing Cedric, she was still determined to keep going, to fight for justice and avenge her parents.
Not long after she closed her eyes, she drifted off to sleep.
Later, as she walked into class with Grace, her phone buzzed again with another message from Cedric. She deliberately glanced around, making sure no one was watching. Then, she casually opened her phone, only to find that he had sent her a question mark.
Noelle raised an eyebrow, wondering what kind of text that was. Grace leaned in. "What's going on? You look seriously conflicted."
"It's nothing." Noelle locked her phone and flipped open her textbook, refusing to reply to Cedric.
Meanwhile, Cedric sat staring at his phone. He'd waited for a while, but she had still not responded. His eyes narrowed slightly, and he twirled the phone in his long fingers, his expression unreadable.
His assistant spoke up cautiously. "Mr. Greene, you've got an international conference scheduled for this afternoon..."
He replied, "We're moving it to this morning. I'll be at Maple Enterprise this afternoon."
