Noelle burst out laughing when she heard Donovan's words.
Donovan was annoyed when he saw her mocking smile. "Noelle, what are you laughing at?"
She replied calmly, "You know exactly why I'm laughing. Mia doesn't like you, and there's nothing you can do about it."
"Noelle, I know you're Mia's best friend. You should think about what's good for her, too. Only I can provide her with happiness."
"Oh, come on. What do you mean by that? Knowing you is the worst thing to have happened to her."
Donovan's expression darkened. "I know what happened back then was my fault, but there was nothing else I could do. You know Mia's situation well enough. What other man, apart from me, would get close to her if not for her money? Who else will treat her with respect like I do?"
Noelle was furious after listening to his explanation. She really did not want to continue talking to him. "Treat her with respect? You're the last person to be saying that."
However, he would not back down so easily. "Noelle, as Mia's friend, shouldn't you be concerned about her future? I'll make it up to her. I'll pay her back when I make enough money."
She snatched the bouquet from his hands and threw it to the ground.
"Noelle, what are you doing?" he asked.
Noelle looked at Donovan in disgust and replied, "Mr. Donovan, do you seriously think you're the only smart person alive? You hurt someone, and you expect to be forgiven after saying a few nice words and acting like you're trying to make amends? You really haven't changed one bit."
Staring at her, he asked, "Then, tell me. What do I have to do for Mia to accept me? It's not like I don't have feelings for her. Mia's a good girl, and I've made up my mind to marry her and spend my life with her. Besides, I'm also not a bad husband. I've never fooled around with anyone else in my life."
He wanted to take responsibility after using Mia's money.
Rolling her eyes, Noelle replied, "Do you think Mia needs your pity? She already likes someone else, and he's way better than you."
With that, she turned around and left. She felt extremely embarrassed to have such a family.
She could not believe just how shameless the Liddells were. They always did something disgraceful only to turn around and beg for forgiveness, pretending like they had learned their lesson.
It was nothing short of disgusting.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. At that point, the curiosity that brought her to campus that day had been mostly snuffed out.
