Donovan grew upset. "What's with the tone? Do you think I'd leak evidence to Mrs. Cantrell? Besides, you never told me any of this either."
Of course, he cared about the case. But Noelle hadn't told him anything. Even if he wanted to, he didn't have anything to offer.
Frank tried to smooth things over. "Noelle probably meant the press coverage. The trial hasn't even started yet. We might be at a disadvantage if news got out."
Donovan fell silent. "What could I do if Mrs. Cantrell insisted on reporting it? Besides, we've got the evidence. What are we afraid of?"
Wyatt chimed in, "What we really need to worry about is whether the Greenes will make a move. After all, our attorney is also their lead counsel. We need to be ready if they change their mind."
At that, everyone turned to Noelle.
She lowered her gaze. She didn't know about Emma's condition.
If Ruth was the only one with a compatible kidney, it was obvious what the Merlocks might demand in return.
Noelle nearly sneered. So that was why Cedric didn't visit her. Besides, the Greenes had a hand in what happened back then.
She really couldn't be sure of anything anymore.
Countless memories flashed through Noelle's mind, and she finally looked up. "Yes, we do need a backup plan. Let's get another attorney to follow the case."
Donovan said, "If you ask me, we should just drop the Greenes' lawyer completely. We'll lose everything if they pull anything."
Noelle didn't respond.
Frank tested the waters. "Noelle, I know the situation between you and Cedric makes this a hard call. But that man had ulterior motives when he approached you. We can't afford to let our guard down."
Noelle's heart tightened. But her face remained expressionless. "Just prepare the replacement lawyer. We'll deal with the rest later."
The trial hadn't started yet. They still had time to investigate.
Donovan scoffed. "Noelle, don't let emotions get in the way. Who knows? Maybe Cedric only got close to you back then just so you'd go easy on him."
