Ruth grabbed Laura's hand. "Laura, you'd better work hard. You're the best socialite there is, aren't you?
"I've poured so much resources and money into you, you know? Are you really telling me that you can't do anything when it's time for you to repay me?"
Laura glanced at her with a look of mockery. "But once those men found out about your situation, all they want is just to sleep with me. None of them would want to marry me."
She used to be so high up the social ladder that she never even had to spare a glance at those men. And now, she had to lower herself to be with them. Just the thought alone made her sick.
"Then just sleep with them! You can easily secure your position by getting pregnant," Ruth replied.
Laura stared at her own mother in disbelief. "Mom, what are you even saying? I'm your own daughter, you know?! I'm not some random woman on the streets!"
She could not believe that Ruth was telling her to just sleep with the men.
Ruth replied nonchalantly. "What about that fool from the Newton family? They've got connections in the judicial system. If you get together with him, my case will no longer be of concern."
Laura replied with disbelief. "His mother already came up to me and said some very awful things. They'll never help you even if I really got married to him."
"Then sweet-talk him into helping me when you're in bed! He's their only son! There's no way you can't win him over!"
Ruth did not see it as much of a problem. As long as that foolish single child of the Newton family made a fuss about it, his family would surely step in to help.
She knew very much about how to manipulate men like them. They were the easiest to deal with.
"But I'm also a human being, Mom. I'm not just some object for you to use," Laura replied.
Ruth was starting to lose it. "Is this how you repay me after raising you up for years?! You're just going to watch me die and not do a thing to help?!
"Are you going to be like your father, who divorced and cut ties with me? If it weren't for me, the Merlock family would've gone bankrupt years ago.
"Do you think you could've gotten to live such a good life otherwise? Do you think you could have become the number one socialite?" She was slowly but surely reaching a dead end.
Dieter distanced himself completely from Ruth, seemingly forgetting about who it was that had made the Merlock family wealthy in the first place.
Samantha walked over and said, "Mom, Laura became the top socialite through her own efforts as well."
"She will not be treated as just any random woman on the street! And who are you to plead on her behalf?
"Remember all the trouble you've given me from all the bullying you've been doing on the campus? Someone even died! Who do you think cleaned up your mess back then?!"
Samantha instantly shrank back in retreat. Ruth then pointed at Samantha's nose and continued, "If it weren't for me, would the both of you be living such an easy life? It's your turn to repay the favor!"
Laura crouched down, shut her eyes, and started crying her heart out. She wondered just how her life had come to such a state.
She could not understand why her life had become like this or why Noelle could not let her off, just this once.
…
Meanwhile, Noelle drove herself back to school. As she got out of the car, she instinctively glanced around and saw that there were no familiar vehicles in sight. She let out a breath of relief, but her mood turned slightly sour.
Noelle then walked straight into the campus. Not far away from her was a car that slowly pulled out of a nearby alley. Cedric rolled down the car window and fixed his gaze on Noelle's back all the way until her figure disappeared from view.
