Chapter 39
I blinked at him. “Why?”
“Because I’ve seen the way he looks at you. He’s brighter lately. If it gets too deep and you leave, I’m not sure he’ll come back from it this time.”
I nodded slowly. He had a point. “I came here to bury my former self. I‘ m no longer Mrs. Blackwood or Luna Jane. I’m just Jane… Jane Ashford.”
George raised an eyebrow. “Ah! The divorce.” He sucked his teeth. “Wasn’t like that in my day. Help me understand, will you?”
I tried to dodge the topic with a small smile. “Oh, it’s a typical sob story. Nothing interesting. I…”
But when I looked at him again, saw the way his brows furrowed in concern. I couldn’t speak. I saw empathy, sadness. And for some reason, it hurt more than anything else.

I knew he was concerned for me. But I’d started this already, I was going to finish it. With the strength of my wolf and the moon goddess.
“This isn’t going to be a clean fight, sweetheart,” George continued. “This battle doesn’t involve just you. It involves everyone close to you.”
I turned to face him fully. “I said I’m ready. I’m not afraid to fight.”
“Are you?” he asked. “Because when they pin everything on you, and they will, it won’t just be your burden to bear. It’ll fall on him too. His business, his reputation… his pack.”
My stomach twisted. “But what does all this have to do with Aaron?”
“It’s because…”
The doorbell rang.
Polin looked up from the stove. “I’ll get it.” She wiped her hands on her apron and disappeared.
We waited in silence and I decided to turn my attention to the window. She returned a moment later, and locked her gaze on me.
