I pulled out the documents without hesitation. I scanned through it quickly. It was Xander’s response to the divorce filing.

What I didn’t expect however was a counterclaim.

Not only did Xander deny every single thing, there was also a long list of accusations. Adultery, abuse, defamation… abandonment. I abandoned Xander? Was he delusional or just crazy? Because this is some warped version of reality.

My wolf growled angrily. I bit my lip, struggling to keep her at bay.

He painted me as the monster, making himself look like the victim. Xander Blackwood, the poor, heartbroken husband.

Bastard.

An hour later, I was in my lawyer Hailey’s office, seated across from the polished wooden desk. Right now, dressed in a blue blazer, her silver hair pulled into a tight knot, she didn’t look like she used to be an Alpha. Until she looked up from the document and met my eyes.

I stared at the shelf behind her, filled with books on werewolf law, conflict mediation and a few framed photos of her and her brother.

Hailey’s story was quite a unique one. She’d left the pack to her brother, because that wasn’t what she really wanted. Instead, she chose to learn the law better than anyone else.

“He’s calling you a deserter,” she said cooly.

“Yeah. He did that part well.”

She looked back down at the document, turning the page carefully. “But according to what you’ve told me, the adultery and emotional abuse was a breaking point for you.”

I nodded. “It wasn’t exactly a warm send–off.”

Hailey maintained her calm expression as she read even further. Her eyebrow shot up every so often as if she thought the same thing I did: His claims were ridiculous.

She finally set the last page aside and folded her hands on the desk. “This is a family court, Jane. Not a truth–telling conference. They don’t care who’s right, they care who can prove their side of the story.”

She tapped the top document. “We have to respond to his allegations directly. One by one. His version might be fictional, but it is strategic.”

“He says you abandoned him,” she went on. “Can you explain that?”

“He’s

“I know. But again, that’s not the question. The court would want to know what you can prove.” She glanced at the page again. “Cruel treatment. That one’s creative. Imaginative even.”

“I don’t have to say much about that.”
