After that, neither of them took the initiative to speak for the next hour.

The nurse at the desk called to her softly.

Nella looked over and asked, “What is it?”

The nurse lifted her chin toward Alfred’s tall, angry-looking back.

“Did you two get into a fight?”

Nella froze for a moment, then smiled and shook her head. “No.”

“Then he’s sulking at you.”

She looked at Nella with a teasing smile and winked playfully.

“You didn’t see it. You’d only been gone two minutes, and he kept staring at the door. I can’t believe you’ve been married three years, and you’re still this in love. You really hid it well.”

In love?

Nella couldn’t help zoning out, a trace of confusion rising in her eyes.

It was the first time she’d heard anyone describe her relationship with Alfred using those words.

Before, she might’ve secretly felt happy. But now, there was only irony left.

She smiled at the nurse, not in the mood to discuss her marriage.

When Nella walked out of the injection room, she saw Alfred standing silently at the entrance of the ER lobby.

Outside, heavy snow was falling, flake after flake, piling into thick layers.

Nella opened her umbrella. “Wait here. I’ll go get the car.”

She was about to step into the snow.

But the next second, the umbrella handle-and her hand-were wrapped in a large, well- defined palm.

Maybe because his fever had just gone down, Alfred’s palm was still warm.

So warm it made Nella’s chest tingle.

She turned her head and met Alfred’s gaze, dark and bottomless.

Nella didn’t insist.

She pressed down the unsteady rhythm in her chest and nodded.

The car slowly drove out of Apex Medical, heading toward Emerald Vista Bay.

No one spoke along the way.

When they got home, Zoey was already gone.

Under the glaring headlights, the bloodstain by the couch stood out starkly.

It was hard to miss.

The moment Nella stepped inside, her gaze was drawn to it.

Only then did her curiosity finally surface.

What exactly had happened between them? How did Alfred end up with a gash that deep?

But when Alfred saw her staring at the blood, he thought she’d misunderstood his relationship with Zoey again.
