When a heavy snow hit, once the sunroom was opened, the entire garden would be enclosed inside it, protected from the blizzard.
But now, the sunroom over the garden hadn’t been opened at all, and every flower Nella had planted there had been torn out by human hands.
The sunflowers were snapped clean in half, scattered carelessly in the soil.
The white hyacinths had been ripped out by the roots.
The bright red daisies had been knocked down, flung everywhere, and then trampled straight into the mud.
Even the filler plants meant to complement the garden were toppled messily across the ground.
The garden she’d tended with care for nearly three years was destroyed just like that.
Snow kept falling from the sky, flake by flake.
It covered the ruined flowers and their sorry state.
It also covered the wreckage of her ten years, sparing her from looking too exposed.
Nella thought she’d explode with rage.
But she realized she felt calm. Even relieved.
She was relieved that the last remaining tie between her and this house was finally gone.
The snow fell heavier and heavier. Seeing that Nella still hadn’t come back inside, Alfred went out to call her in.
He pushed open the terrace door. “It’s snowing so hard. Come in—”
The words died in his throat when he saw the scene in front of him.
In an instant, something clicked. His pupils shrank sharply.
A flash of panic surged through his chest, and he looked at Nella.
There was no anger on her face. Instead, her expression was so calm that it held no ripple at all.
But the calmer she looked, the deeper Alfred’s unease grew.

His Adam’s apple bobbed as he stared at her calm face and said hoarsely, “Zoey did this. I-I’ll make her apologize to you right away.”
As he spoke, he pulled out his phone to make the call.
But for some reason, his hand was shaking badly. His fingers kept missing the right spot on the
screen.
Nella lifted her hand slightly and stopped him.
She looked away from the wrecked flowers.
“Forget it. These flowers needed to be replaced anyway.”
With that, she turned around and walked back inside, her expression unchanged.
Alfred followed right after her.
Looking at her calm brows and eyes, his unease only grew.
He trailed carefully beside her and asked softly, “Then what kind of flowers do you like now? I’ll have the gardener come tomorrow. Or we can just replant the same ones you had before.”
After saying that, he looked at her nervously, anxiety creeping into his eyes.
Nella simply shook her head.
“Forget it. I won’t plant anything anymore. Work’s busy now. I don’t really have time to take care of it. Just get a landscape designer and redo that area into a proper feature.”
“Then what style do you like? I’ll have the designer redo it based on your ideas,” Alfred said quickly.
“Anything’s fine. I don’t really care.”
Nella pressed her tired temples, looked up at Alfred, hesitated for a few seconds, then said, “We need to talk.”
The moment she said that, Alfred’s heart jolted.
That vague sense of unease intensified.
He looked at her quietly and answered, “Okay.”
Nella walked over and sat down on the couch. That glaring pool of red beside it was still painfully obvious.
