Alfred felt like his chest was burning from her silent tears, but he didn’t even realize it.
He kept calling Nella’s name, careful and tense, worried that speaking too loudly might frighten her.
He watched her frown. Her face was full of pure despair and helplessness.
When she called for him to save her, there wasn’t a trace of hope-like even in her dreams, she didn’t think he’d show up.
What was she dreaming about?
Why would she have such a dream?
“Nella …
Everything was so dark.
The snow felt like icy hands around Nella’s neck, squeezing her breath until it felt like she might not make it.
She thought she heard Alfred’s voice-near, yet somehow far.
It didn’t have his usual sharpness or impatience when he reproached her. Instead, there was worry woven into it.
No. That couldn’t be him. She must be imagining it.
Then suddenly, she shot upright in bed, breaking free from the nightmare.
Her breath came fast and ragged, panic gripping her.
Alfred saw her wide, unfocused eyes. She wasn’t fully awake yet, but her body was shaking like
crazy.
Clearly, that dream had terrified her.
“Nella, are you okay?”
His low voice carried a hint of care and concern.

Hearing him, Nella froze for a moment. Slowly, the emptiness in her eyes started to fade.
She saw him and stopped cold.
“Nightmare?” Alfred asked softly.
His voice was gentle. It sounded so soft that it almost felt unreal.
She pushed the fear down, nodded, and whispered, “Sorry. Did I wake you?”
He noticed the polite distance in her tone. It cut deeper than anything in the living room earlier.
He didn’t answer her. Instead, he asked, “What was the dream? Can you tell me?”
It sounded like he was trying to reach her, to close the gap between them that had been driving him crazy.
Nella was stunned.
Since the avalanche, nightmares had haunted her every night for over half a month.
Every time she closed her eyes, the same terrifying memory replayed, like clockwork.
That feeling of near-death and raw panic came back again and again.
It was a slow, cruel torture, or maybe a reminder.
“It’s nothing. Just a dream.”
She climbed out of bed. “I’ll wash my face. You should go back to sleep.”
In the bathroom, the cold water shocked her awake and pushed the nightmare out of her mind.
But her hands, braced on the sink, still trembled.
She realized that just sharing a room or even a bed with Alfred made her instinctively shrink back.
She lingered in the bathroom a while before finally stepping out.
Alfred was on the couch, leaning back, eyes closed, pinching the bridge of his nose, clearly frustrated.
