Zoey lifted her gaze toward the door. Alfred stood outside, his brows tightly knit.

He still came to see her, but it felt more like he was here out of obligation.

The moment she realized that, Zoey’s heart sank.

Her eyes quickly filled with tears as she stood up from the chair, her voice choking.
